Description
Early 19th Century Bound Volume of Baltimore Publishers & DistributorsIncludes "Buy A Broom" Pictorial Advertisement with John Cole's Shop **)auction summary(** This auction features a bound volume of early 19th century sheet music which were either published or sold in Baltimore. The large volume contains predominately works published or distributed through the significant John Cole's Music Store on Market Street, including the first pictoral advertisement of a music store to appear on music sold (a common practice thereafter). Also featured to a large degree are music published or distributed through George Willig's store, also on Market street. All music included predates at least 1833 (with the early owner's signature being dated as of that year, after binding). The sheets show some age with some age-toning & moderate foxing, several sheets have imperfections such as tears, and many have faintly penciled early notation in the margins, but all apear to be complete and of respectible condition considering their use & age. This is a unique and rare find, and should not be passed up. I have included the following information to provide a historical context of the item offered: "In the late 17th century, Americans like William Billings were establishing a bold, new style of vocal performance, markedly distinct from European traditions. John Cole, an important publisher and tune collector in Baltimore, known for pushing a rarefied European outlook on American music, responded with the tunebook Beauties of Psalmody, which denigrated the new techniques, especially fuguing. Cole continued publishing tunebooks up to 1842, and soon began operating his own singing school."- Wikipedia Another important contribution Cole made to music publishing history was the first appearence of pictorial self advertisement on the title pages of music sheets, which as the John Hopkins website states, became popular thereafter into the early part of the 20th century. The piece in relation, "Buy a Broom", is described in detail, but not featured on the Hopkins website. (What is fetured is a followsuit of the original design.) The original, however, is included in this bound volume (see image below). And if that were not important enough alone, also included are numerous other contemporary publishings by John Cole and other Baltimore based Music Publishing companies. Since Wikipedia also states, "In the colonial era, opera and theatrical music were a major part of Baltimorean musical life, and Protestant churches were another important avenue for music performance and education. Baltimore rose to regional performance as an industrial and commercial center, and also become home to some of the most important music publishing firms in colonial North America." these publishing houses rising out of this important part in America's music history are a tangible artifact of an important history. And thus, this volume offered should be a valuable asset to a collector or archivist of music history or even Baltimore history.
