Make: KnabeStyle: Rococo Victorian StyleSize: 42” deep, 82” wide, 38” tallYear: Circa 1800Serial #: 22835Finish: Brazilian RosewoodKnabe square pianos are consistently the finest square pianos. Knabe is one of America's older established names, and they built high quality, expensive pianos from 1839-1983, one of the few American piano manufacturers to survive over a century. Today, the Knabe name is being built in Asian import pianos, but they are not the same Knabe as the once were. In the past decade alone these pianos have nearly DOUBLED in value, making their restoration a very good investment. This is a wonderful piano with a lot of potential. The piano is made of Brazilian Rosewood, and is in the carved Rococo Victorian style. Today, Brazilian Rosewood is endangered and nearly impossible to get in the Unitzed States. It is highly desirable as a result. The Victorian Square Grand PianoThese magnificent instruments were once very popular in both America andEurope during the Victorian era. They were produced from about 1850 to about1880, and were usually hand made with intricately carved rosewood, mahogany,or ebony cabinets. The last known production of square pianos seems to beabout 1885 due to the new popularity of the upright piano. Before theupright piano gained its popularity in the late 19th century, the squaregrand piano was the instrument of choice in most fashionable homes. Althoughit is quite large and striking in appearance, it's tone is very differentthan contemporary instruments. The square piano sounds reminiscent of theearly pianoforte of Mozart's era with a tone that is best described ashaving a soft, harp-like quality. This instrument was well suited for smallintimate gatherings, which were commonplace among the Victorians. At thattime, society was accustomed to the square piano's delicate tone qualitybecause it had been set as the standard for well over a hundred years. Thenew and more powerful grand and upright pianos of the 19th century wereinitially considered harsh and unpleasant to listen to, so the moreprimitive square piano remained popular with the general public well intothe 20th century. Today, society is accustomed to the tone of theconventional piano, so square pianos sound very light and delicate to modernlisteners. For the past decade, there has been a growing interest in these instruments. This revival of the square piano has caused the demand for these instrumentsto increase significantly, as well as their value. Since restored squarepianos have the potential to be worth thousands of dollars, many collectorsconsider them to be good investments. Many Victorian homes are eitherpurchasing square pianos or having their heirloom instrument restored tocomplete their music room or parlor.
