Description
This offering is for a white Baldwin Type R Grand Piano, manufactured in 1985 (serial #261914) and directly delivered to Radio City Music Hall for the 1985 Liberace Concert Tour. It is one of six baby grands that flanked Liberace's concert grand for the performance, each played by a prodigy. After the performance, each piano was played and signed by Liberace, who also drew his trademark piano logo above his signature and date. Subsequently, they found their way into collections or were auctioned off. I purchased this piano more than 15 years ago for $17000, from a dealer who purchased it as the result of a divorce auction proceeding of its prior owners. It has an humidification/dehumidification system. Water is added to the system, which releases vapors during dry season, and apparently heats to keep the workings dry during more humid times. It was and is a beautiful instrument, now the product of dire times and an impending move. Its main flaw is that the top (which opens to two different levels) was constantly kept in open position for extended times before I purchased it, causing the yellowing shown in one of the pictures. The sunbleaching, I'm told, is actually a yellowing of the wax atop the white paint, and could be stripped by using a bleaching agent, or a product used to elimate 'yellow wax build-up.' In any event, it never was significant problem for me, as top is more elegantly propped open anyway. The picture really enhances the color variance, and makes it seem much worse than in person. The signature and drawing with date is vibrant and clear, although picture of it appears very grainy as it was taken in less than perfect lighting conditions. It appears close to the embossed 'Baldwin Made in USA' insignia, and is clearly visible when lid is in either of its open positions. A signed letter from Robert S. Preim Jr of the Baldwin Piano and Organ Company attests to its origins and early life. If you consider its only flaw to be the yellowing behind the closed lid, consider the price reduction as a good discount to have the lid restored. Even without its history, this model Baldwin should have a value close to its offering price. Please email any questions. Piano is located near Hazleton PA.
