Description
PANAMA (Wm. H. Tyers 1911), arranged by BOB ZURKE,published by Leo Feist Inc New York 1939 This fine arrangement of the traditional-jazz standard Panama was published in the Leo Feist series of "Modern Piano Transcriptions." The sheets are handsomely printed with pebbled stock covers, and engraved in easy-to-read sheets, five pages, six systems per page. Short-lived Bob Zurke (1910-1944) was a powerhouse pianist, having replaced the equally imposing Joe Sullivan in the Bob Crosby band in 1936. I find this Zurke arrangement not quite as demanding technically as other Zurkes I've seen. The L.H. never calls for 10ths, but relies on octave-chord, note-chord, or walking octaves for the rhythm. It's scored in the keys of F and B-flat major, and Zurke treats the three themes in six variations. His R.H. figures are logical and accessible. The arrangement is well-marked dynamically. The copy offered is in excellent used condition, original spines (cover and inside booked pages), with no repairs or patches. Max Morath
