An 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" booklet, written by H.P.Longstreet, is entitled "Practical Finger Control" and outlines 31 finger exercises (with great hand-drawn sketches) The 7 larger (9 1/2" x 12") Song Books contain Lessons 13 through 96. Evidently the 1st book in the set (Lessons 1 to 12) was worn out by the original owner - who seems to have not progressed past Lesson 13. In addition to page upon page of sheet music, these make for an absolutely marvelous read! The books are filled with wonderful anecdotes and recipes for living life to the fullest..the tone is one of the teacher actually sitting beside the student, discussing the importance of each song and it's place in the realm of music, history and life in general. Each lesson is introduced with extensive narratives, often accompanied by equally enchanting black & white photos of the time.  Some lessons focus on a particular composer, offering biographical sketches, historical insights and concluding with sheet music of one of their compositions.  The author shares his perspective on every aspect and genre of music. All of the above is housed between the front and back covers of the original binder for the Home Study Course. The spine is missing and there is some damage to the front (see photo), but the picture is intact, still vivid and indicative of what you will find within. The inside of the back cover is imprinted with the US School of Music trademark and says "U.S. School of Music, 225 Fifth Avenue, New York 10, N.Y." If you collect piano or music related memorabilia, this is truly a 'must have'...and a 'should have' for any historical buff.
