~ Rare Edwardian Era Sheet Music ~ Photo - Illustrated, Art Nouveau Cover Black - Face Boy Performers Minstrelsy 1910 I BELIEVED HER TOO As Featured by Johnson Brothers and Johnson MUSIC BY CHAS. SHISLER WORDS BY BARTLEY COSTELLO Published by Welch and Wilsky 812 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA. Production Series 5 (1910) Printed music with photo-pictorial exterior; approx. 10 1/2 " x 13 3/4"; sheet folded once with single inserted leaf ... words and music; Verso of front has advertising with sample words and music for another song; back exterior of sheet has advertisement for other songs CONDITION: A Few small edge tears and slight nicking; fore-edge of insert leaf is a bit wrinkled and has a small tear, as well as a small one on the fold edge; exterior has very mild surface rub .... else bright and clean The front cover has two half-tone photographs of a performing trio framed by flowers designed in an art nouveau style. This trio consists of a father and his two sons, billed as Johnson Brothers and Johnson. The remarkable thing about this act is that while the father performed as himself, the two young boys, who seem to have been pre-teens, performed in black-face minstrel style. Below the song and music credits are two small vignette photographs of the publishing team, Welch & Wilsky. While examples of their sheet music is to be found, their production does not seem to have been as prolific as other music publishers. This is a rare piece of sheet music, desirable not only for the music contained within, but for its visual record of a twentieth century white black-face act. I could find no record of this sheet music any where, and no other copies for sale. I could find no reference to the act called Johnson Brothers and Johnson. The cover of the sheet music was designed by J. Stillmunk. What a nifty memorial to a past long gone! This is the rare original sheet music from 1910, not a facsimile. The top photo is a portrait of the boys and their father, sans costumes. Below that is a great publicity photograph of the boys and their father as they were on stage. The boys are quite prominently dressed as if performing in Minstrelsy shows. Note the boy on the right is holding a tamborine. This is avery interesting record of what seems to be a completely forgotten act. Philadelphia Music Publishers, Welch and Wilsky ("Two Ws") I BELIEVED HER TOO Once I met a little summer girl and she looked good to me And she said I looked good to her She told me that her father was as rich as could eb And just how proud her home folks were -- She told me they expected her to wed and earl or count, But she confessed she loved me best-- Although her dad would give up almost any old amount To buy a crown or crest. CHORUS And I believed her too -- Thought every word was true -- All about her father having millions but to burn, That Rockefeller came to him his system just to learn -- And I believed her too, like anyone would do -- She said 'twould break her heart, If from me she had to part And I believed her too. Then I met this little summer girl in winter time in town, And strange to say, -'twas in a store, She didn't greet ee with a smile But with a weary frown, Can you blame me for getting sore - I lean'd across the ribbon counter and I whispered, "Miss why workest Thou with all thy wealth?" She said, "My Dearest Dear Papa has Recommended this to keep me in good health ...
